Field studies range from a few days of analysis to months of integrated work. The scope should be set by the decision, not by habit.
Signs a study is warranted
- A significant capital decision depends on reservoir behavior you don’t yet understand
- Offset results are inconsistent with your current model
- An acquisition or divestiture needs a defensible technical case
Keep it as small as it can be
The right study is the smallest one that resolves the decision with an appropriate level of confidence. Anything beyond that is cost without benefit.
